A rainscreen is an air gap left between a home’s siding and sheath, designed to allow water to escape if it enters the structure beyond the siding. It helps to protect the inner workings of the home, particularly the framing, siding, sheath and any other features that would get affected should water build up and mold begin to grow. They are essential in allowing walls to drain faster, require less repairs and in turn, last longer.

Although not previously well-known, this design is now being incorporated in the construction of new homes all across Vancouver. As of 2007, a building code/bylaw mandated that single and two-family homes are constructed with rainscreen systems that provide two planes of protection against rain.
